MOM releases revisions to Employment Act

The $4,500 salary cap will be removed from the Employment Act (EA) and professionals, managers and executives (PMEs) will be covered by the Act, Manpower Minister Lim Swee Say said today in parliament.

This means that PMEs will enjoy core employee benefits such as public holiday and sick leave entitlements, timely payment of salary and allowable deductions, as well as redress for wrongful dismissal. Under the section on core provisions, the current EA only covers Singaporeans earning under $4,500.

Also, the salary cap for non-workmen – eg rank-and-file workers such as clerks – will be raised from $2,500 to $2,600. The cap for overtime pay for non-workmen will also be increased from $2,250 to $2,600.

Additionally, the Employment Claims Tribunal will start hearing claims related to wrongful dismissal, instead of the MOM.

The government will implement the revisions to the EA by April 2019, reported Channel NewsAsia.

MOM had invited public feedback in January 2018 on the proposed revisions.
