Need short term workers? There’s an app for that
Contractual workers are increasingly becoming the go-to solution for firms looking to ramp up productivity while keeping lean. But with both industry needs and jobseekers’ offerings constantly shifting, finding a way to connect the two is quite the moving target.

But now there’s an app for that.

UShift is a Singapore-based company that matches hourly-waged workers with employers, right from through phones. It was founded in June by Robinson Banckaert and Philippe Benedetti, and backed by the Asia Pacific Internet Group (APACIG).

Utilizing geolocation tech, a private messaging platform, and other similar services, their mobile app streamlines traditional processes by automating it on both the search and hiring ends.

"Unlike most online job platforms, UShift matches jobs according to jobseekers’ interests and qualifications using machine learning algorithms that consolidate the data of worker's previous job experiences and performances," Blanckaert said in an interview with the Singapore Business Review.

According to him, over 80% of jobs are filled in less than 24 hours, with UShift handling all the administrative tasks and taking a cut of 10 to 20% of the employee’s salary from their employer. Today, more than 400 firms (including brands like Dior, SPH, Pandora, Puma, Mexout, and FoodPanda) use UShift and over 10,000 workers have been approved through their service.

Blanckaert attributes the app’s success to their own proprietary matching algorithm that helps them to instantaneously match suitable candidates to jobs based on their job interests.

"With this algorithm, we were able to fulfill manpower needs on the go, manage last minute replacements and make sure the candidates were relevant for the tasks," he said.

Other countries in Southeast Asia can expect UShift to expand into the rest of the region before the end of 2017.
